Freebee: the Diary Project

11/23/2014

freebee friday Now that we’re really getting into the “sweet spot” of the school year, a lot of ELA teachers are introducing longer form reading like novels. If you’re looking for a great culminating activity, consider using the Diary Project. In this CCSS-aligned activity students will learn to identify the voice and perspective of a character and express that character’s thoughts in writing.

Download this lesson plan today for free. Use it in your classroom to guide Grade 5–12 students toward achieving these Common Core State Standards goals:

R.CCR.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

R.CCR.3 Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

W.CCR.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

W.CCR.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

And let’s not forget the CCSS goals of interdisciplinary literacy! This activity could easily be adapted as a content class activity. Can you imagine half of your class writing President Kennedy’s October 1962 diary entries and half of your class writing Nikita Khrushchev’s? What might Rosa Parks’ diary entry have said the night of December 1, 1955? How about Thomas Edison’s diary the night of October 22, 1879? If you adapt this activity for students to read something other than literature, please send me an email and tell me how it went. I’d love the details. Because we teachers are our own best resource.
