Improv in the Classroom #3

Posted on November 18, 2013 by Britt from EF Explore America
This is the third post in a series of three blog posts with Dr. Katherine McKnight, EF Group Leader, teacher and author of The Second City Guide to Improv in the Classroom. One of the reasons we have featured Katie (aside from the fact that she’s a lot of fun and a true inspiration!), is that she’s a big believer in experiential education. The great thing about improv is that you don’t have to be an expert to get started in your classrooms.

Improv in the Classroom #1

Posted on November 13, 2013 by Rachel from EF Explore America
Last week, we attended the American Middle Level Education Conference in Minneapolis and met some really incredible people. We were so excited to have EF Group Leader, teacher, author and recipient of the 2013 Teachers’ Choice Award, Dr. Katherine McKnight join us at the conference to speak at our session, Active Learning and Improv in the Classroom. One of the reasons we asked Katie to speak (aside from the fact that she’s a lot of fun and a true inspiration!), is that she’s a big believer in experiential education.

New Republic's Misleading Article on CCSS
11/04/2013
This article frustrates me. CCSS is not perfect but this author's article about texts is completely misleading and perpetuates more CCSS mythology.
Lexile is ONE component of the three part system. The three part model EQUALLY emphasizes quantitative measures (LEXILE), qualitative measures (which includes figurative language, symbolism, and prior knowledge) and reader and task considerations (which addresses engagement and motivation). The CCSS document clearly explains that text complexity goes far beyond a simple quantitative measure, like Lexile. The text complexity model was developed to more adequately address the linguistic complexities of literature. Shame on you New Republic. I expect better from this publication.
