common core The first thing that we need to think about when we look at CCSS and this new generation of standards is one of the most important aspects about it: students are at the center of learning.

When you read the CCSS, you’ll notice that the standards are written from a student perspective and provides us with a lens as we consider the “how and why” of our instruction at the classroom level. Using this lens, we notice that CCSS defines skills and how these skills can be used and developed in order to acquire content knowledge (and be able to use that content knowledge in significant, meaningful and original ways).

Speed Date: Reading Strategies

speed dating Last week I worked with my teacher friends at George Washington Community High School in Indianapolis, IN. For the past 20 months we shared a tremendous amount of knowledge and it was definitely time to catalogue all that we know. Recently, the teachers prioritized reviewing and sharing the interdisciplinary literacy strategies. In order to accomplish the cataloguing of their vast knowledge, I introduced “speed dating” to the faculty during the professional learning committee (PLC) meetings last week. The kids look at us and think to themselves, “Why are the teachers driving around in the Fred Flintstone car when they could be driving around in the Prius?”
