Regulations-O-Plenty
2/19/2013
As I work with schools and teachers all over the country, I generally hear the
following responses to the new Common Core State Standards:
- Teachers can finally do what we were trained to do, rather than engage in
excessive test preparation.
- We desperately need the funding to put more technology in the schools.
- We desperately need the time to plan and create the curriculum that will
provide our students with the rigor and relevance that is needed for good
teaching and learning AND to meet the Common Core State Standards.
- Good Grief----ANOTHER initiative.
I want to focus on the last response. Teachers are faced with so many initiatives and
contradictory information that clarity and focus are hard to come by realities in
many of the schools I work in. The teachers and administrators are hard working and
want to do what’s right for kids but as the hurried transition to CCSS is underway, I
worry that we might lose its purpose amid the bureaucracy.
The Common Core State Standards were designed to create clarity and coherence
through a clearly articulated set of rigorous skills for college and career readiness.
We lose that clarity when there are conflicting initiatives that compete for our
educator attention. Educators need greater clarity about the assessment and
implementation of CCSS.
