K 1 Gear Up for 21st Century Teaching & Learning

Teaching adolescents is not what it used to be. The Information Age has brought about sweeping changes. With humor, Katie vividly illustrates what learning looks like in the 21st century classroom and how to gear up your teaching to support each student’s needs and ensure college readiness. You’ll be inspired by real-world examples of 21st century teaching and learning from classrooms and schools across the country. And, you’ll return to your school with a new vision of how to get from “here” to “there.”
9-10:15
A 2 Differentiation & the Common Core: Where to Begin & How to Integrate

Explore the Common Core State Standards and what this new generation of standards means for teaching and learning in the 21st century. Join Katie in this informative and engaging session to unpack the standards and consider the implications for curriculum, assessment, and differentiated instruction. You’ll leave with the tools to plan and implement the Common Core State Standards with differentiated instruction models.
10:45-Noon
A 6 Personalized Learning: Meeting Every Student’s Needs

We have clearly left an industrialized model for education and are in the midst of a contemporary model that emphasizes the needs of the individual learner. Meet the needs of every learner in your classroom by combining your existing systems and technology. Join Katie and explore how to leverage technology, engagement, and individual learner supports to provide meaningful learning experiences that are personalized and put students on the path to college and careers.
1:00-2:15
B 2 Differentiating Texts to Increase Rigor and Relevance

Supporting students of different reading levels is a challenge for all content area teachers. In this idea‑packed session, you’ll learn simple, easy‑to‑use strategies for adapting textbooks, web‑based texts, and articles for different student reading levels.
2:35-3:15
B 6 Homework That Makes Students Think

Get a handle on homework. Katie presents the most recent research on the effectiveness of homework at the middle- and high-school levels. You’ll analyze and reflect on your own attitudes toward homework. And you’ll observe and practice study skills and homework strategies that promote critical thinking and encourage students to internalize what they have learned in content area courses.
