Thoughts on Sir Kenneth Robinson’s Keynote at
National Council of Teachers of English

I have always been a fan of Sir Kenneth Robinson’s work. In a time where
standardized education has become suffocating, creativity, like hope left in
Pandora’s box, must be set free. Sir Kenneth Robinson’s wisdom has always
inspired me and I was lucky enough to very briefly chat with him about my book
on using improvisation to develop student literacy skills (The Second City Guide to
Improv in the Classroom).
Sir Ken had many great quotes during the keynote that I’d like to share:
“If you love something you work at, you never have to work again.”
"Imagination is the heart of human life.”
“Compliance - We're not looking for what students can think and do. We're looking for how well they take in information.”
"Teaching is an art form. It's not a delivery system."
“Education is full of brilliant teachers.”
What I appreciate most about Sir Kenneth Robinson is that his books and lectures
always lead me to greater understandings. As I listened to his assertions that
were often coupled by funny stories and poignant metaphors, I became even more
committed to my ardent teacher belief that creativity is always essential for effective
and meaningful teaching and learning. Oh, and by the way, when creativity is part of
our teaching and learning, our kids learn.
