Literature as a 21st Century Skill with Kylene Beers and Robert Probst

I am a huge fan of Beers and Probst so I was eager to hear them speak at the Secondary Section Get Together this afternoon. Their work is foundational to how we think about literacy instruction and inspired by my idol, Louise Rosenblatt. Together they assert that literature is a vehicle for us to think and be critical of our beliefs in order to develop an even greater understanding of our world.
In this one-hour session, with standing room only, Beers and Probst guided us though an exploration of literature as a 21st century skill. There are many parallels between the study of literature and our current definition of 21st century skills. The session prompted me to develop the following list, comparing the connections between literature and 21st century skills.
- Reading literature triggers us to think critically.
- Reading literature is a catalyst for creating questions and finding answers.
- Reading literature is a vehicle for introspection and understanding others.
As I left the session, I smiled as I remembered why I became an English teacher 25 years ago. I love teaching and sharing literature because literature is life.
