My Thoughts and Take-Aways from My First Session at NCTE
11/15/2012
I attended Literature Lover’s Lament: Learning to Love Non-Fiction. Connecting Real-World Texts to the Common Core Standards this afternoon.
“The teaching of literacy is a shared responsibility.” Carol Jago’s statement is one that I have heard many times before and she’s right. If our students are going to meet the expectations of the CCSS literacy standards, all content teachers must be involved. So what does this mean for middle school and high school teachers? Here are some thoughts:
- Omitting literature and certain texts is never the solution. Instead, our students need to read more. Informational text/nonfiction must be added WITH the literature that we already read. The body of research exploring adolescent reading achievement repeatedly indicates that when students read more, reading and academic achievement always increases.
- At the middle school and high school levels, teachers specialize in specific content areas. We absolutely want content teachers to be subject experts. Great interdisciplinary literacy strategies are great teaching strategies. When we learn about effectively teaching and developing literacy skills, our students can learn content.
- Our schools must have text resources that go beyond the traditional textbook. Specifically, schools need adequate technology and internet accesses, trade books, and novels aplenty. To meet the CCSS interdisciplinary literacy expectations teachers must have the text materials to share a wide variety of texts with their students.
We have tremendous challenges in order to meet the interdisciplinary literacy expectations of CCSS. To meet these challenges our students need more opportunities to read a variety of materials in all content areas.
