Literacy Tip of the Day!

Tips The CCSS w.1 standard focuses on a student's ability to make a claim (or what we used to refer to as a thesis). We use claims all of the time: thesis, postulate, theory, hypothesis and so on.

Here's an idea for teaching w.1.:

Have the students watch the following video on zombie fungus (which is pretty cool) and consider one of the two claims:

Zombie fungus is not beneficial to the environment.
or
Zombie fungus IS beneficial to the environment.

The students can look up additional information in online texts and websites to provide evidence (in addition to the video) to support one of those claims.
